If I could put one thing on a billboard it would be this:
Don't. Work. Hard.
The lie we've been sold is that if we just work hard enough, someday we can get everything we want. That if we sacrifice and suffer, we'll be rewarded (when?) If we grind away, building a business for 15 years, we can sell it, and then be happy (good luck).
But haven't you noticed that people who toil away for 30 years in low-key misery die within a few years of retirement, never actually enjoying life?
Successful entrepreneurs love to tell stories about blood, sweat, and tears.
But if you scratch the surface they'll admit that hard work was NOT the key to their success.
Instead, they...
Hired well, and delegated
Created systems
Found mentors
Leveraged technology
But most importantly, they had a love for the game. They found joy and passion in the work.
So what's the alternative to hard work?
Work with joy. Work with passion. Work intelligently, in flow state.
These people run circles around the workaholics.
Sure, you CAN create wealth from brute hard work. But you've heard enough cautionary tales about those people: divorced, unhealthy, not having a single friend, or their kids don't know them.
I'm NOT saying don't work long hours. If you put 12 hours a day into something and life is joy, carry on.
But let's de-idolize the Elon Musk archetype, all head and no heart.
Let's shun the insatiable greed of Jeff Bezos.
Throw the Steve Jobs disregard for humans out the window.
Fuck the profit-first motive.
Let's normalize business leaders who are whole-ass humans...
who don't work evenings or weekends, but take 10 weeks of vacation
who have friends, and pick up their kids every day
who read books and cultivate wisdom
who do the shadow work, and balance their masculine and feminine
who take care of their bodies and minds
who laugh and play, who don't take it seriously
who love money but don't worship it, who see wealth as a tool for improving themselves and the world.
Forgive me, but, fuck hard work.
"Hard work = success" is a devastating myth, and it's time for it to die.
Work with joy.
And if you're a business owner who's done with hustle and grind culture, and understand that your work is NOT your worth, book a 30-min Grow Your Business Session with me to find out if you're a fit for business mentorship.
